Aug. 21 (UPI) -- HBO is developing The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a new series set in the world of the DC Comics character Superman.

The network announced Friday that it has ordered the eight-episode, half-hour comedy from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television.

Superman actor Skyler Gisondo will reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen, a photographer at the Daily Planet who is a friend and colleague of Clark Kent, aka Superman, and Lois Lane, played by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan in the 2025 film directed by James Gunn.

The series also stars Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds and Tim Baltz also have roles.

The People v. Gorilla Grodd hails from Tony Yacenda, who directs and serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer alongside Perrault. Gunn and Peter Safran are also executive producers.

The series is presented as a "true" crime docuseries that follows Olsen as he investigates Gorilla Grodd, a superintelligent ape convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City.

"Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials," an official synopsis reads.

The People v. Gorilla Grodd will join HBO's DCEU slate, which also features the series Peacemaker, starring John Cena.
