Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said it is investigating the death of former Sen. Mitt Romney's sister-in-law, whose body was found at a parking garage.

Authorities found the body of Carrie Romney, 64, around 8:30 p.m. Friday outside a parking garage on Town Center Drive in Santa Clarita, Calif. The garage was near the Hyatt Regency hotel.

Unnamed law enforcement officials told KNBC-TV, Los Angeles, on Monday that she had jumped or fell from the five-story structure.

The LACSD told ABC News it was investigating Carrie Romney's death, the cause of which had been "deferred" pending toxicology results.

Authorities told KNBC the woman's death doesn't appear to involve foul play.

Mitt Romney represented Utah in the U.S. Senate from 2019 until earlier this year. He was also the governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007.

In a statement to People magazine, he asked for privacy in the wake of Carrie Romney's death.

"Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all of our lives," the statement said.

Carrie Romney was married to the politician's older brother, Scott Romney, a lawyer.
