Calif. Gov. Newsom accuses Trump of targeting him politically in probe

June 15 (UPI) -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday said the federal government was investigating him in what he described as an abuse of the grand jury process.

He spoke about the probe in a video posted on YouTube.

"In recent days, federal agents have knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees. Not because they found a crime, because they're simply trying to find one," he said.

"They're abusing the grand jury process, digging through years and years of random documents."

Gov. Newsom said there's been no evidence he's committed a crime and accused the Trump administration of targeting members of his family, including his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

If President Donald Trump "can't intimidate me, he'll go after the mother of our children," Gov. Newsom said. "Donald Trump picked the wrong target. We have nothing to hide."

A source familiar with the goings-on told CNN there's been no formal investigation into the governor, but the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of California is probing Jennifer Siebel Newsom and other people connected to him for possible tax crimes. The source said the probe was prompted by a whistleblower, not the Trump administration.

A source told MS Now that evidence suggested Jennifer Siebel Newsom used nonprofit funds for personal use.

Gov. Newsom said he believes the Trump administration is targeting him because he's considering running for president in 2028.
