Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fans storm out without finding out who won after controversial fight
by Steve Wollaston, https://www.facebook.com/stevewollastonjournalist/, Alex Richards · Birmingham LiveMike Tyson and Jake Paul were met with a chorus of boos during the second half of their highly anticipated fight, leading to fans leaving before the winner was even announced. The contentious match between the YouTube star and the 58 year old former world heavyweight champion was a major event in Texas, broadcast globally on Netflix.
However, it failed to live up to the hype, with many spectators having had enough by the halfway point. By the end of the bout, the lack of reaction from the crowd as Paul was declared the winner by Unanimous Decision against 'Iron Mike' was telling of how many had already left.
The victory - 80-72 with two judges and 79-73 with the third - marked the 11th win in Paul's 12-fight career, his only loss so far being against boxer and Love Island star Tommy Fury. Fans expressed disappointment at the uninspiring nature of the fight, with Tyson struggling due to a knee issue and Paul seemingly reluctant to try for a knockout, despite his corner advising him "You can stop Mike now" before the seventh round.
"Mike doesn't have it anymore," commented Roy Jones Jr, providing commentary for Netflix. "Legs are gone."
Speaking in the ring post-fight, as the remaining fans continued to leave, Paul said: " Mike Tyson, it's such an honour. Let's give it up for Mike, the greatest to ever do it. We wouldn't be here without him today with him, this man is an icon.", reports the Mirror.
In the aftermath of the fight, he reflected on the encounter with respect and admiration for his opponent: "It's just an honour to be able to fight him. It was really tough fight. I expected it to be."
He continued to praise the boxing legend, saying, "He was exactly what I thought. One of the greatest to ever do it. An icon. I was trying to hurt him a little bit. I was scared he was going to hurt me. I did my best."
Nevertheless, at the post-fight press conference, he revealed injuries that affected his performance: "Two days ago I sprained my ankle, completely tore the ligament, anterior ligament and like snapped the other side of my foot," claimed Paul - though these claims have not been verified by Mirror Sport. .
He elaborated on his approach during the match and the crowd's reaction: "I wanted to give the fans a show but I didn't want to hurt someone that didn't need to be hurt. There was a point where he (Tyson) was not engaging back, I could just tell his age was showing a little bit. That violence war thing... that went away as the rounds went on."
Despite a mixed reception, Paul remained defiant: "People just love to hate me. I intentionally say things for people to hate. That's what I like to do. If people want to see more... give me a couple of months. I tried to give the best fight I possibly could."
Finally, Paul insisted he is unfazed by criticism: "When someone's just surviving in the ring, it's hard to make it exciting. I don't care what people have to say. It is what it is."
The match kicked off with Paul using his youth to his advantage, closing the gap on Tyson, throwing a jab and quickly creating distance. Tyson managed to land a few heavy body shots before the two fighters clinched, much to the crowd's displeasure.
The second round saw Paul doing his best to dodge Tyson's notoriously heavy blows before clinching again. The third round started off more explosively, with Tyson swinging out only to be met with a series of left hooks from Paul.
Gaining confidence, the YouTuber continued to land heavy blows on a static Tyson, who seemed relieved when the bell rang. The fourth round began with both fighters missing jabs, but Tyson struggled to keep up with Paul, who was able to pick his spots on the increasingly tired Tyson.
Paul landed a heavy one-two combo to mark the halfway point of the fight as Tyson tried to use vertical movement to avoid Paul's strikes, the former heavyweight champion managing to land a stiff overhand right to end the round. Tyson held his own in the sixth, sending Paul running from each attempted strike, before the two exchanged heavy strikes throughout the seventh, which ended with Tyson landing a shot to the head.
However, the fight was essentially over before the final round, with Tyson taking his time to rise from the corner stool. Tyson's renowned power seemed to have diminished in his punches, and the two fighters shared a hug as the bell rang.
