by · Birmingham Live

The latest episode of Death In Paradise delivered a shocking blow to Commissioner Selwyn Patterson. A long-standing fixture of the Saint Marie police force, Commissioner Patterson has been a beloved character since the show's inception over a decade ago, with Don Warrington bringing the endearing Selwyn to life.

In a dramatic turn of events, JP Hooper, played by Tobi Bakare, returns to the island amidst a challenging case for the team and shares some unexpected news with the Commissioner. As they sit outside Catherine's bar, Sergeant Hooper, now working under the Chief Commissioner in Jamaica, reveals that he has some startling information to share.

When questioned by the Commissioner about his absence from the airport, JP confesses that he has discovered something significant at the Jamaican headquarters. He hesitantly discloses, "I wondered if I could have a chat with you. Have you got some time, sir? So, there are some things I found out about at the headquarters back in Jamaica. They loop me into these things, you know? I shouldn't really be saying anything, sir, but after everything you have done for me, I thought it would be wrong if I didn't."

With the Commissioner's curiosity piqued, JP continues: "They are looking to change some things here. Streamlining. And your position, Commissioner, they are going to dissolve it. I am so sorry, sir."

This revelation leaves fans worried about the potential departure of Commissioner Patterson, a character portrayed by Don Warrington, reports the Mirror.

Details about his future on the show remain under wraps. Discussing the storyline and his character's reaction to a significant plot twist, he revealed: "Not well. It's shocking for him, and he does his best to get the superiors to change their decision and see things differently."

The actor also delved into the complexities of his role, saying, "It's very interesting because we discover other aspects of Selwyn and that's always the joy about playing a character like him - there are so many different sides to him. You think you know about somebody but due to life events, you learn more about them. He's opening up, he's a bit like a flower coming in to bloom."

Selwyn is simultaneously dealing with DI Mervin Wilson's entrance, portrayed by Don Gilet. When asked about Selwyn's initial impressions of the newcomer, he explained: "He's cagey and he's watchful to see how he does. He's not looking at traits but he's looking at who Mervin really is. There's a slight edge because Mervin has his way of doing things, and the team have theirs. But that changes when Selwyn begins to see there's more to Mervin. He finds Mervin's methods of working stressful, but he goes along with it up to a point until Mervin reaches that point and he sees another side of the Commissioner."
