Aston Villa ace has made his stance clear on international snub - and it's good news for Unai Emery

Morgan Rogers will be knocking on the door for a senior England call-up if he continues to impress for Aston Villa

by · Birmingham Live

Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers won't be dwelling on Lee Carsley's decision not to hand him his first senior England call-up for the October internationals.

The 22-year-old has sparkled for Villa so far this season, helping Unai Emery's side enjoy an impressive start to the campaign. Villa have won four of their opening six league games and claimed successive Champions League victories by beating Bayern Munich 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Rogers recorded two assists in the win over Wolves last month, before he opened his account for the season in the 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road last weekend. After playing his part in Villa's historic win against Bayern, Rogers was asked about the possibility of being included in Carsley's England squad, which was named the following day.

"I don’t play to think about it at all," Rogers said. "That is the pinnacle of football and an honour. Hopefully one day I can do that. I don’t play football to think like that.

"Of course I want to impress and show everyone why I am where I am and why I deserve to be here. Of course it is a natural progression I want to achieve.

"But I am not thinking too much that I need to perform, that I need to shine. I just want to help the team win. If Aston Villa are winning then I’m happy and if I’m performing it is the most important thing for me."

It's good news for Emery that Rogers will remain fully concentrated on matters at Villa, knowing his performances will be rewarded later down the line. Rogers was however once again called-up to the Under-21 side for their fixtures against Ukraine and Azerbaijan this month.

Asked to explain why Rogers missed out, interim Three Lions boss Carsley said: “There’s a lot of players that were close to being in this squad with the talent we have available The challenge is, it would have been quite easy to name a 40-man squad and almost justify having them all in. The challenge is making sure we pick a competitive squad and a squad where we can win the two games.

“The players who have been left out, it’s just a case of me having a look at other players. It’s nothing to do with form, it’s a case of using this period to experiment a little bit. The players who have been left out all have a case to be in the squad but I thought we saw the benefit of the last squad being fresh and feeling fresh.

“It’s not that [those] players didn’t bring that but I thought it was important it wasn’t a copy and paste and that they had earned their place in the squad. I’ve spoken to all the players that aren’t involved and have had good conversations with them. I’ve made it clear to all of them that it’s a short-term decision from myself.”
