Half of drivers left fuming when they see this on the roads - but Highway Code says they are wrong

Many motorists aren't familiar with this road rule

Half of drivers are unaware of recent changes to rules about where cyclists can ride on the roads. It will be common for motorists to be left fuming if they approach two or more cyclists riding in the middle of the road, perceiving them to be blocking their path.

Some may even sound their horns in frustration. Many drivers assume that cyclists should always keep to the left hand side so vehicles can safely pass but this is not the case, according to the terms of the Highway Code.

Warwickshire Police acknowledged how "cyclists riding two abreast can be a subject of heated debate". It added: "But the updated Highway Code advises that cyclists may ride two abreast as long as they are considerate of other road users."

Research by The AA found only half of motorists were aware that cyclists had the right to ride side by side in the middle of the road. The Highway Code says cyclists should let drivers overtake when it is safe to do so.

It states: "Be considerate of the needs of other road users when riding in groups. You can ride two abreast and it can be safer to do so, particularly in larger groups or when accompanying children or less experienced riders.

"Be aware of drivers behind you and allow them to overtake (for example, by moving into single file or stopping) when you feel it is safe to let them do so." Tim Rankin, managing director of AA Accident Assist, said: “Three in 10 drivers admit they haven’t looked at the Highway Code since they passed their test. New drivers and those learning to drive will be the ones most aware of the update, but it is long-standing motorists that need to be contacted to ensure they know the rules.

“It’s vital that we keep reminding drivers of these changes, which can make our roads safer and reduces crashes. Each year, millions of drivers are contacted with car tax reminders and licence renewals. This would be the ideal opportunity to inform everyone of the updated rules and keep the changes at the front of their minds.”
