£200 cost of living payments entering bank accounts - but they won't be automatic

Cash will be available for some of the poorest households this winter

by · Birmingham Live

Special payments to help with the cost of living are set to start entering bank accounts. Hundreds of pounds could be available depending on your circumstances and where you live.

But people will have to apply for one of these payments in order to get one. They will be able to do this through their local council, as long as they meet eligibility criteria.

Money has been given to local authorities by the Government as part of the Household Support Fund (HSF). Those on low incomes who are struggling to pay their bills can then apply to their council for payments.

Birmingham City Council made payments of £200 this summer, though different amounts will be available across the country. In order to be successful, people will usually have to prove they are suffering financial hardship. They may also have to show they are receiving benefits, though some may also be accepted if they do not claim benefits.

The HSF has been extended through winter 2024/25. People should monitor their local council's Household Support Fund and cost of living pages online for the latest details on when and how to apply.

The Government says: "You may be able to get help with essential costs from your local council. This is sometimes known as ‘the Household Support Fund’. This could help if you’re struggling to afford things like: energy and water bills; food; essential items

"Your council may also offer food vouchers to families during the school holidays. Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council."
