Samsung has finally confirmed the date for its next big Unpacked event, during which it will set out its new foldable phone range.
We’ve received a digital invite from Samsung to an Unpacked event that will be held in London on 22 July at 2pm BST (9am EDT /3pm CEST).
That’s been an open secret for a couple of months now, but it’s always nice to have it confirmed.
Unpacking the Unpacked
So what’s going to be revealed at this UK-held event? “Samsung will unveil the newest additions to the Galaxy portfolio, which has defined the foldable category,” says the company.
“Combining intelligent capabilities with innovative form factors, the next generation of Galaxy devices are set to deliver more personal and adaptive experiences and set a new standard for the AI era.”
This is expected to include follow-ups to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, but also a brand-new model.
In addition to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8, the company is set to unveil the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Muddying the foldable waters
We’ve confused you, haven’t we? Blame Samsung. The company is tipped to launch a new book-style foldable with a wider aspect ratio, which is expected to take on the mantle of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.
The direct successor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, meanwhile, is tipped to be called the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Given that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is almost certainly a pre-emptive measure to head off the forthcoming iPhone Ultra – Apple’s foldable debut is also predicted to be wider than usual – we’re expecting confusion to reign.
There’s a cynical voice in my head whispering that maybe this is the whole point. Waters muddied, Apple launch plans disrupted. Job done.
The rational voice in my head is far louder, however. Samsung is the foundational name in the foldable phone business, so we’re all very interested to see what it’s got in store for us next.
This isn’t the only foldable news Samsung has announced this week. The company also took to Weibo (China’s big social network) to confirm that its “brand new form factor” will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
It then invites its fans to guess what this product might be. Hmm, we wonder.
Other announcements and early offers
Besides these new foldables, Samsung’s Unpacked event could see the debut of two new Samsung Galaxy Watch wearables (including a follow-up to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra) and possibly some news on the company’s Galaxy Glasses.
You’ll be able to watch a live stream of the Samsung Unpacked event on the company’s website and its YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, you can head over to the company’s Unpacked web page and register your interest for some exclusive offers. That includes the chance to win one of eight £1,000 vouchers, an extra £100 of trade-ins, and a £30 voucher to spend on Galaxy products.
