After Killing Galaxy Z TriFold, Samsung Already Working on Thinner Successor and a Sliding Phone
by Kristijan Lucic · Android HeadlinesYesterday, Samsung confirmed that it’s discontinuing the Galaxy Z TriFold, only three months after it was released. The company did not give out any explanation, and all that managed to shock everyone. It’s a very odd move. Well, now we have some more positive news. The company is allegedly working on a Galaxy Z TriFold successor, a thinner one.
Samsung is working on a thinner and lighter Galaxy Z TriFold successor
The information comes from yeux1122, a tipster. He claims that the company started developing two types of hybrid devices. The first one is the Galaxy Z TriFold’s successor, while the second is a phone with a slidable OLED display.
The Galaxy Z TriFold 2, or whatever name Samsung chooses, will allegedly be both thinner and lighter. The tipster also says that the hinge that Samsung will use has completed most of its verification processes.
That smartphone is tipped to arrive in mid-2027, so we’ll have to wait for over a year at this point. The device is expected to be slightly thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 when folded, and that phone measures 8.9mm.
A phone with a slidable display is also coming
What about the other phone? Well, it will probably use Samsung’s Slidable Flex series panel. It will rely on a manual sliding mechanism, though, rather than a motorized one. When extended, the phone will offer a 7-inch display.
Furthermore, that phone with a slidable display is allegedly thinner than the prototypes Samsung showed off at CES and MWC. Those were motorized prototypes, by the way. This phone is expected in late 2027 or early 2028.
So, Samsung not only didn’t abandon its tri-fold plans, but is actively working on a Galaxy Z TriFold successor, along with its first smartphone with a slidable display.
Still, discontinuing the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold after only three months is just… weird. Storage and memory prices could be the reason why, unless Samsung spotted a major issue with the device. The sales were proceeding great, as every restock got sold out, and quickly.
