Heading into the clash, many observers have labelled Hugo Broos' side as underdogs, largely due to Mexico's rich World Cup history and home-ground advantage.
SA, meanwhile, return to the global showpiece looking to make an impact after years of rebuilding under Broos, who has transformed the national team into one of the continent's most competitive sides.
Bafana's impressive rise in recent years has included winning the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) bronze medal and establishing themselves as one of Africa's most difficult teams to beat.
Vásquez, the 27-year-old centre-back, believes Mexico must approach the encounter with caution and respect, stressing that Bafana possess enough quality to trouble any opponent.
"We respect all our opponents, not just South Africa, who we know are a very physical opponent, a strong opponent who will counter-attack well," said Vásquez, per ESPN.
Respect for Bafana
"We are aware of all their situations, and we must always treat them with respect."
The Genoa defender said they aren't just focused on being first in their group, emphasizing the need to take everything one game at a time.
Vásquez's remarks underline the respect Bafana have earned ahead of the tournament, with Mexico clearly wary of the threat posed by Broos' men despite being viewed as favourites.
A positive result against the hosts would significantly boost South Africa's hopes of progressing from the group stages and could provide the perfect start to what they hope will be a memorable World Cup campaign.
