Shiny Board of Peace logo resembles Trump-style UN emblem
Round map at center of US president’s new international organization only shows North America and parts of South America; many countries remain skeptical of group
by ToI Staff · The Times of IsraelThe logo of US President Donald Trump’s newly-established Board of Peace has had onlookers noticing its resemblance to the logo of the United Nations, which the board could potentially rival.
Both logos have a globe framed by olive branches. The Board of Peace logo, however, only shows the US at the center with North America and the top of South America, while the UN logo depicts all six inhabited continents.
And instead of the UN’s blue, the Board of Peace logo has a gold color scheme, a motif Trump is known for preferring, and for installing in his own residence: The US president had a gold-themed remodel done of the Oval Office after he returned to the presidency last year.
Foreign dignitaries have also given Trump golden gifts, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who last year presented him with a golden pager, referencing the 2024 clandestine Israeli exploding-beeper operation that decimated Hezbollah.
Trump inaugurated the Board of Peace on Thursday at the annual gathering of the global business and political elite in Davos, Switzerland.
The board was initially envisioned as a group of world leaders meant to oversee the postwar development of Gaza. But its charter does not mention the Strip, and there are increasing signs that Trump wants its mandate to extend to resolving other conflicts. Skepticism about its mandate has led some countries, particularly in Europe, to decline to join it.
“We’ll do it in conjunction with the United Nations,” Trump said at Davos, even as he denigrated the UN for, in his view, not doing enough to calm some conflicts around the globe.
Gaza, Israel and the Middle East do not appear on the face of the globe in the board’s logo.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that some countries’ leaders have indicated they plan to join but still require approval from their parliaments, and the Trump administration says it has also gotten queries about membership from countries that hadn’t been invited to participate yet.
Netanyahu has agreed to join the board after his office previously criticized the makeup of one of the board’s subordinate bodies tasked with overseeing Gaza. But the premier did not allow for an Israeli representative to take part in the Thursday signing ceremony, even though President Isaac Herzog and Economy Minister Nir Barkat were already in Davos.
Questions remain, however, about what the eventual board will look like, as Canada, France and Spain have either declined offers to sit on the board or been disinvited.
The Board of Peace’s charter names Trump the board’s chairman for life.
According to the charter, the chairman has “exclusive authority to create, modify, or dissolve subsidiary entities as necessary or appropriate to fulfill the Board of Peace’s mission.”
