President Donald Trump's Department of Justice recently fired Maurene Comey — the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey — from her position in the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office after nearly a decade in her role.
Politico reported Wednesday that the reason for Comey's firing "was not immediately clear." During her time as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, Comey worked numerous high-profile cases including convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell (who is currently serving a 20-year sentence) and Sean "Diddy" Combs, who was just convicted on several charges in his recent criminal trial.
Comey's firing comes just one day after House Republicans narrowly voted down a resolution to compel the Department of Justice to release all of its files on Epstein, which failed by just one vote. Attorney General Pam Bondi has been under a particularly high level of scrutiny after insisting that there was no "client list" in the Epstein file and that she considered the matter closed.

Bondi's remarks set off a firestorm among far-right media figures, many of whom reminded the Trump administration that several of its top law enforcement officials like Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino all spent years hyping conspiracy theories about Epstein and his alleged client list. Trump has lately used his social media platform to directly address criticism from his base, and to suggest that anyone still talking about the Epstein case is not a true supporter.
"[Democrats'] new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bulls---,' hook, line, and sinker. They haven’t learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years," Trump said Wednesday. "I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country’s history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax. Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don’t even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don’t want their support anymore!"
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has also weighed in on the scandal, insisting that while there is no daylight between him and the president on the release of the Epstein files, he hopes Bondi will ultimately release everything she has to the public in the name of "transparency."
“I like Pam, I think she’s done a good job but we need the DOJ focusing on the major priorities," Johnson said on MAGA podcaster Benny Johnson's show this week. “I’m anxious to put this behind us.”
