On Monday night, January 20, President Donald Trump issued an executive order granting pardons to roughly 1500 Capitol riot defendants — some of whom violently attacked police officers when they invaded the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.
Trump's pardons are drawing widespread criticism from Democrats as well as Never Trump Republicans. On MSNBC, legal analyst Anthony Coley — who served as public affairs director for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) under former President Joe Biden — was disgusted by the pardons and said of Trump, "I think he owes the country an apology."
But many January 6 defendants are celebrating, including Jake Angeli-Chansley, a.k.a. The QAnon Shaman.

On X, formerly Twitter, Chansley posted, in all caps, " I JUST GOT THE NEWS FROM MY LAWYER... I GOT A PARDON BABY! THANK YOU PRESIDENT TRUMP!!! NOW I AM GONNA BUY SOME MOTHA FU*KIN GUNS!!! I LOVE THIS COUNTRY!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!"
Chansley added, "J6ers are getting released & JUSTICE HAS COME... EVERYTHING done in the dark WILL come to light!"
In September 2021, Chansley pleaded guilty to a federal felony charge of obstructing an official proceeding. He was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison but did not serve the entire sentence.
Chansley was released to a halfway house in May 2023.
