Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal lead the Irish stars tipped for an Oscar nomination on Thursday.

The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards will be announced by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills at 1:30pm Irish time today.

Much of the Irish focus will be on Hamnet, with Jessie Buckley tipped for a Best Actress nomination and Paul Mescal in contention for Best Supporting Actor.

The pair star in the adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel, which is widely expected to feature prominently when the shortlist is announced.

O’Farrell herself is predicted to earn a screenplay nomination alongside director Chloé Zhao.

Another Irish actor, Andrew Scott, could also feature in the Best Supporting Actor race for his role in the comedy-drama Blue Moon.

The film was made in Ireland and produced in association with Dublin-based Wild Atlantic Pictures.

Veteran costume designer Consolata Boyle – previously nominated for Victoria & Abdul, Florence Foster Jenkins, and The Queen – is also considered a strong contender for her work on the film.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark sci-fi comedy Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and produced in part by Dublin’s Element Pictures, is also expected to attract nominations across several categories.

Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan, a past Oscar nominee for Poor Things and The Favourite, served as director of photography on the film.

In the technical categories, Richard Baneham – a two-time Oscar winner for his visual effects work on Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water – will likely receive a nomination in the Visual Effects category for the film’s third instalment.

Two shorts are also in contention for nominations in the Animated Short Film category: Retirement Plan, directed by Dublin-based filmmaker John Kelly and voiced by Domhnall Gleeson; and Éiru, produced by Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon and directed by Giovanna Ferrari, with Coco Teehan Roche voicing the title character.

Cartoon Saloon has a notable Oscar track record, with previous nominations for The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, WolfWalkers, The Breadwinner, and the short film Late Afternoon.

The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, 15 March.
