An 18-year-old wearing a tactical vest was running toward the U.S. Capitol with a loaded shotgun when officers arrested him midday Tuesday, U.S. Capitol police (USCP) say.

There is no ongoing threat and there didn't appear to be any other suspects, police said.

Just after 12 p.m., the suspect, a Georgia resident, parked a white Mercedes in the 100 block of Maryland Avenue, got out with a shotgun and began running toward the Capitol, USCP Michael Sullivan said.

Sullivan said the man was "challenged" by USCP officers, who ordered him to put the gun down, and he did.

Police identified him as 18-year-old Carter Camacho of Smyrna, Georgia.

In addition to his tactical vest, Camacho also had tactical gloves and, in the Mercedes, a Kevlar helmet and gas mask, Sullivan said. The suspect also had additional rounds of ammunition on him, Sullivan said.

Officers are reviewing video evidence and are asking the public for any cellphone video that would help the investigation.

Camacho is facing charges of unlawful activities, carrying a rifle without a license, having an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.

USCP's Threat Assessment Section is investigating to determine a motive. He was not on file with USCP, the agency said.

The Mercedes was not registered to Camacho, police said. It wasn't immediately clear who the vehicle belongs to.

Police asked the public to stay away during the response and investigation, but the scene now has been cleared.

Sullivan said Capitol police will be prepared for the State of the Union next week and that the department takes the State of the Union very seriously.
