As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on the longest foreign visit of his tenure a historic five-nation tour from July 2 to July 9  all eyes are on the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where India’s voice will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the multipolar world order. PM Modi’s commitment to multilateralism, South-South cooperation, and India-first diplomacy is at the heart of this landmark visit. With stops in Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, this mission goes beyond bilateral talks it reflects India’s rising stature in global forums. The BRICS platform, in particular, will see India pushing for a just, democratic, and equitable international system. From energy and technology partnerships to cultural ties and development cooperation, this visit demonstrates how the Modi government is placing India firmly on the global leadership map not just as a participant but as a decisive force.

Strengthening Ties Across the Global South: Ghana and Trinidad & Tobago

PM Modi’s journey begins in Ghana, a key African partner and an influential voice in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Scheduled for July 2-3, his visit is focused on rejuvenating historical ties and expanding cooperation in health, energy, investment, and capacity building. Notably, PM Modi will address Ghana’s Parliament  a rare honor and a symbol of India’s deepening democratic engagement with Africa.

On July 3-4, the Prime Minister lands in Trinidad & Tobago, a country with deep civilizational links to India through the diaspora. With Indian indentured labourers having arrived there 180 years ago, this leg of the journey is personal and political. Modi’s meetings with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and newly elected Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar are expected to reinforce cultural bonds and introduce new economic and strategic collaborations. The visit also signals New Delhi’s intent to play a stronger role in the Caribbean community (CARICOM).

A Historic First in Argentina: Redefining Latin American Engagement

From the Caribbean, Modi will travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina  making him the first Indian Prime Minister to pay a bilateral visit in 57 years. PM Modi will hold discussions with President Javier Milei, with whom he already shares a cordial rapport. Their meeting is expected to advance mutual interests in agriculture, critical minerals, clean energy, tourism, and technology. Argentina is a G20 member and a rising force in Latin America, and this visit signals India’s intention to engage more substantively with South America.

Under Modi’s leadership, India’s foreign policy has transformed from reactive to proactive. By strengthening ties with Latin American economies, the government is unlocking new investment opportunities, particularly in lithium and rare-earth supply chains  crucial for India’s renewable energy and electric vehicle ambitions.

Championing BRICS and Global South in Brazil

The most high-profile leg of the visit will be in Brazil, where PM Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7. As a founding member of BRICS, India under Modi has consistently emphasized reforming global governance and creating a just, democratic, and multipolar world order. The Rio summit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical shifts, and India is expected to champion the voices of emerging economies and advocate for deeper South-South cooperation.

PM Modi will also undertake a State Visit to Brasilia, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades. In bilateral meetings with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, India and Brazil are expected to align their vision on climate action, food security, and technology transfer. These talks will further cement India’s leadership in the Global South alliance, particularly in forums like the G20, BRICS, and IBSA (India-Brazil-South Africa).

Celebrating Shared Struggles and Solidarity in Namibia

The final stop will be Namibia, a country with which India shares a historic bond over anti-colonial solidarity. PM Modi’s visit includes high-level meetings with President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and an address to the Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament  a gesture reflecting the two nations’ shared commitment to democratic ideals and development.

Namibia offers strategic opportunities in green hydrogen, mining, and education exchanges, and India is poised to expand cooperation in these areas. This leg also strengthens India’s presence in southern Africa  a region with rich natural resources and growing geopolitical significance.

Modi’s Global Vision in Action

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s five-nation tour isn’t just a diplomatic journey — it’s a manifestation of India’s growing global confidence and leadership under his tenure. From reviving ties with diaspora-rich nations to forging partnerships in Latin America and reinforcing solidarity across Africa, this visit demonstrates a new foreign policy model: India as the voice of the Global South, a tech-driven economic powerhouse, and a responsible global stakeholder.

By using forums like BRICS and bilateral platforms alike, Modi has underscored India’s role in shaping a new, inclusive world order. His emphasis on multipolarity, equity, and collaboration reflects not only the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians but also those of developing nations seeking a fair stake in global decision-making.

As India aims to become a $5 trillion economy and a leader in AI, semiconductors, and clean energy, foreign policy under PM Modi is proving to be a pillar of national resurgence. This tour is not just about visits it’s about vision. A vision that sees India leading, not following, in the decades to come.
