BJP Leader Seeks Home Ministry Probe Into Dhruv Rathee's Citizenship After Bengaluru Protest

Questions about YouTuber Dhruv Rathee’s nationality have surfaced again, this time through a formal letter to the Union Home Ministry. The letter came just before he was detained in Gurugram ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) Jantar Mantar protest.

Former Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao asked the Union Home Ministry to verify Rathee’s citizenship and immigration status, a day after Rathee took part in a CJP-led protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bengaluru. In his letter to the Union Home Secretary, Rao sought verification of Rathee’s nationality, the passport he used to enter India, his visa category or other permission to stay, and any conditions attached to it. Rathee had spoken at the October 8 “People’s Tribunal” protest at Freedom Park, where CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and actor-activist Prakash Raj were also present.

What the claim rests on

Rao said Rathee was “understood” to hold German citizenship, and asked whether a foreign national could join or address an organised political protest concerning Indian constitutional institutions. The letter does not cite a document or an official record. Reports note that Rao’s assertion about Rathee’s citizenship has not been independently established. Outlook likewise reported that the complaint seeks official verification, and that the reports do not establish that Rathee violated any rules. Siasat reported that Rao described his request as not motivated by disagreement with Rathee.

Why the question keeps coming up

Rathee has lived in Germany for years. He moved there after finishing high school to study mechanical engineering. His wife is German, which has fuelled speculation online. The idea that he is a German citizen has circulated for years in online forums, but those comments are unverified assertions. Living in Germany and being married to a German do not by themselves mean someone has taken German citizenship.

The claim gained traction again in recent days. Posts on X asked an AI chatbot about it on October 8, and the replies said there was no public evidence that he holds German citizenship. Those replies are not authoritative sources either. I would treat both the claim and the chatbot answers with caution.

One video report on the controversy carried an unattributed claim that Rathee holds an Indian passport and has not taken German citizenship. I could not find an official confirmation of that either.

What we know and don’t know

There is no official statement from the Home Ministry on Rao’s letter that I could find. I also found no response from Rathee to the claim in the reports I reviewed. His citizenship status has not been publicly documented by any government authority. If he were a foreign national, the question of what visa and conditions apply to political activity would be one for immigration authorities, not for speculation. For now, the claim remains an allegation in a complaint, and the verification Rao asked for has not been made public.
