Donald Trump Announces Surprise India-Pakistan Ceasefire, Credits American Mediation

In a dramatic diplomatic breakthrough, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following mediation efforts led by the United States. The announcement came after an intense night of closed-door negotiations involving senior officials from both nations and American mediators. “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Donald Trump posted on Truth Social. “Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The ceasefire deal can be seen as a moment of de-escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, who have seen heightened tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack that involved Pakistan’s nurtured terrorists that killed 26 Indian civilians. The attack, attributed to Pakistan-backed terror outfits, had brought the region to the brink of armed conflict, with both sides mobilizing troops along the Line of Control and increasing air surveillance. The U.S. State Department confirmed that, in addition to halting hostilities, both countries have agreed to begin talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral venue. Topics are expected to include counter-terrorism cooperation, border security, and humanitarian exchanges.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance also shared Trump’s post, despite his earlier stance that the India-Pakistan dispute was “fundamentally none of our business.” His repost suggests a possible shift in Washington’s position amid rising concerns over regional stability and global security.  Pakistan without an iota of doubt should be held responsible for the tension that rose in the Indian Subcontinent between the two countries given the terrorist groups the country has nurtured went up to kill 26 Indians at Pahalgam by asking their faith. It is undoubtedly the Pahalgam incident that made the tolerance point of the Indian state exceed, but it is not the sole incident that inspired India to take up a tough stand against Pakistan. Over the past three decades, India has endured a relentless series of terrorist attacks orchestrated by Pakistan-based groups.
