Olivier Assayas and Kristen Stewart Reunite for Spiritual World; Vicky Krieps, Niels Schneider, Riley Keough, Wagner Moura, and Barbara Sukowa Join Cast

When, earlier this year, Olivier Assayas told me that his next project would be “in the vein” of Personal Shopper, it didn’t take much to parse that this meant the long-rumored reunion with Kristen Stewart—their first major collaboration since that 2016 film, itself the closest thing to a modern classic. (Her turn in Irma Vep is a nice cameo, and for this perhaps doesn’t count.) That’s confirmed with today’s word of Spiritual World, a new feature in which she’ll play “Ada, a haunted young woman with clairvoyant powers who is visited by mysterious premonitions.” [Ion Cinema]

Great news and not even the half of it. Spiritual World is a who’s-who of acting royalty: Riley Keough, Vicky Krieps, Niels Schneider (fresh off The Unknown), Wagner Moura, and longtime Fassbinder collaborator Barbara Sukowa. (Surely there’ll be space to sneak in Lars Eidinger?) Curiosa Films and ARTE France are behind the project, which shoots from February to April between France and Germany. Nothing else is known to date, and it might be nice keeping it like so until a late-2027 or, we can guess, Cannes 2028 premiere—about as anticipated as these things get whenever and wherever it finally lands.
