Trump says King Charles III agrees that Iran cannot develop a nuclear weapon

by · The Washington Times

President Trump said Tuesday that King Charles III of Britain agrees with his efforts to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon, drawing the traditionally apolitical monarchy into the diplomatic conversations about the Iran war.

The U.K. has publicly refused to provide full military support for the U.S. and Israeli operation against Iran, sparking outrage from Mr. Trump and souring his relationship with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Mr. Trump noted the two historic allies’ military cooperation “from the trenches of World War I to the beaches of Normandy, from the frozen hills of Korea to the scorching sands of North Africa and the Middle East, and we’re doing a little Middle East work right now.”

“And we’re never going to let that opponent ever — Charles agrees with me, even more than I do — we’re never going to let that opponent have a nuclear weapon,” Mr. Trump continued.

The U.S. leader went on to note that “our countries have stood together defiant, triumphant against the forces of communism, fascism and tyranny.”

The comment was received with a round of applause.

“History has known no more powerful force than the combination of American patriotism and British pride,” he added.

Officials in the U.K. were hopeful that the king’s speech would smooth over tensions with Mr. Trump over Iran and related issues of NATO burden-sharing.
