Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces new honor to celebrate movie theaters

by · The Washington Times

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a new honor called The Academy Marquee List to recognize movie theaters that provide an outstanding movie-going experience, news outlets report.

The program will launch in spring 2027, coinciding with the Academy’s 100th anniversary. A committee of Academy members and the Board of Governors will recognize 25 theaters in the United States and 25 internationally.

Jason Reitman, the Academy’s director branch governor, proposed the initiative after becoming a theater owner himself.

More than 30 filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan, have joined the initiative to preserve the Fox Village Westwood Theatre in Los Angeles.

Eligible theaters must be brick-and-mortar venues operating year-round. Evaluation criteria include community engagement, audiovisual presentation, programming diversity, historic significance, accessibility, design and concessions.

Winners won’t receive an Oscar, but they will receive a physical certification to display in their lobbies and will be featured on the Academy’s digital platforms.
