Texas’ Porn Ban Faces Supreme Court Judgment Today

Texas is, for the most part, a very conservative state. A lot of the different things that have been legalized in other states, such as gambling and marijuana.

Despite the efforts of many individuals and groups, neither of those has been legalized here yet, and to take it a step further, Texas even banned the use of pornography sites unless they utilized age verification.

What Led Texas To Initially Implement The Ban

Bottom line is they didn't want underage people being able to access porn online. It's become increasingly easy to access free porn sites, and many underage kids were logging on to them.

Texas decided it no longer wanted that, so it forced these sites to run an age verification before allowing them in. Some of the websites didn't agree with it and decided to simply pull access altogether from the state.

PornHub & Others Band Together

When H.B. 1181 was passed and signed, PornHub along with other sites teamed up with the Free Speech Coalition to file an injunction. They ended up losing in state courts and that was when PornHub pulled access.

Other sites decided to add the age verification so users could still access it if they were of age. PornHub argued users shouldn't have to hand over an ID and other personal info in order to consume the product.

The Decision Is Appealed To The U.S. Supreme Court

Determined not to lay down, these sites ultimately appealed the decision and ran it all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, who did ultimately hear the case.

A ruling is expected today, Friday, June 27th, as to whether or not the decision by Texas and other states will be upheld or if the requirement for age verification is unlawful and therefore should be removed.
