'My fault' - Paul Warne issues Derby County verdict and nails cause of Swansea defeat
by Leigh Curtis · Derbyshire LivePaul Warne said Derby County paid the price for being "soft" after a dismal start to the first half helped Swansea to a 2-1 win at Pride Park.
The Rams were miles off the standards required as they conceded twice inside 15 minutes with Zan Vipotnik and Ronald both on target.
Derby launched a spirited fightback after that and saw Kayden Jackson hit the bar in the second half, before Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored with a penalty.
And while Derby were the better team for 60 minutes, head coach Warne said they had given themselves too much to do.
"We didn't get close enough, we weren't aggressive enough and just looked a bit soft," he said. "That's my honest opinion. That's my fault. I send the team out. Maybe I didn't message that properly. Sometimes it doesn't come down to shape or tactics. That's what I thought the difference was.
"Their first goal was an unbelievable finish. Credit to them for that. Sometimes you need a worldie goal to win you a game. Weirdly after Jacob had an injury, the lads came over and I thought Callum was unlucky to win a penalty.
"I watched it back and if I didn't think it was I would say. I am not that guy. After the first 25 minutes it looked like we were the only team who was going to score.
"I really enjoyed it. I had 70 minutes of watching my team give everything. That's all I can ask. Unfortunately we came up short but I don't think we have had that many attempts in the Championship this season. It was disappointing that we started as poorly as we did. That's a lesson to all of us that last year in League One we probably win that 4-2, but the Championship is another level. We need to start games better."
