Biden authorizes deployment of 1,000 soldiers to Hurricane Helene-hit states, at least 166 dead in storm aftermath
President Joe Biden on Wednesday authorized deployment of 1,000 active-duty U.S. troops to assist in the response and recovery efforts in communities hit by Hurricane Helene. The White House said in a statement that the soldiers would “support the delivery of food, water and other critical commodities.” The deployment of the soldiers will also “provide additional manpower and logistics capabilities, enabling FEMA [the Federal Emergency Management Agency] and other interagency partners to reach the hardest-hit areas as quickly as possible.” Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris traveled Wednesday to the impacted areas. The president went to South Carolina to talk with first responders and local officials. He later took an aerial survey of parts of the Carolinas damaged by the storm.
