London's 11th century fish, meat markets to close after 1,000 years in business
The Billingsgate fish market and the Smithfield meat market have both existed in some shape or form since the 11th century. Charles Dickens described Smithfield as a centre of “filth and mire", referencing the market in both ”Oliver Twist” and “Great Expectations”.
