The state Cabinet led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde decided that native cow breeds should be given the status of Rajyamata - Gomata (state mother cow) for their cultural and agricultural significance.

The Maharashtra government has also expressed concern over the drastic decrease in the indigenous breed of the cows.
