The resolution is being put to a vote in the 193-member assembly as the war in Gaza approaches its first anniversary.

India was among the 43 countries that abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly. The other key players who opted to abstain were Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. 

The resolution, which received 124 votes in favour, welcomes a July advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice that said Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and settlements is illegal and should be withdrawn.

In addition to demanding withdrawal, the resolution urges member states to cease importing products from Israeli settlements and halt the transfer of arms to Israel, where there is a risk of use in Palestinian territories.

“The occupation must be brought to an end,” Martin said in a statement.
