WASHINGTON >> Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to serve as the powerful speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, said today that she will not run for reelection to Congress in 2026, ending the four-decade career of a progressive Democratic icon often vilified by the right.

On Thursday, the 85-year-old Speaker Emerita released a heartfelt video aimed at her constituents announcing the decision. “I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know I will not be seeking re-election to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative,” Pelosi said. The video interspersed city scenes of San Francisco from different eras alongside footage of Pelosi during her time in the public eye, from her first campaign to her time overseeing the U.S. House of Representatives as Speaker during the Covid-19 pandemic. Pelosi was first elected to Congress in 1987 and became the first female Speaker of the House in 2007. She served in that role until 2011 when Republicans took over the House. In 2019, she returned to her role as Speaker, the first person to do so in six decades.
