The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide for the Establishment of State Police and for Related Matters (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026,” was approved on Thursday during consideration at the Committee of the Whole, presided over by Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu said the proposal has been prioritised over other amendment bills.

At the end of the voting process, 289 members supported the motion for state police while four voted against it, effectively clearing the proposal for further legislative progression within the constitutional amendment process.

The proposals, which emerged from months of consultations and public hearings across the country, seek to address issues related to security, electoral processes, judicial administration, local government autonomy, the devolution of powers, and institutional reforms.

The House of Representatives is set to vote on 37 constitutional amendment bills covering state police, electoral reforms, local government autonomy and more.
