Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Mexico on Sunday said it killed "El Mencho," the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, in an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, a Mexican state known for trafficking fentanyl and other drugs to the United States.

Nemesio Oseguera, the drug lord known as 'El Mencho' and who was killed by the army on Sunday, was an infamous figure in Mexico and was someone who had "unleashed terror" as part of his violent tactics leading one of the country's biggest drug cartels, says France 24's correspondent Ioan Grillo.

Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The United States opened a 24-hour crisis hotline and urged Americans in several Mexican tourist destinations to shelter in place Monday after violence triggered by the killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho."
