Libya's prime minister said the chief of staff of the country's army was killed in an airplane accident in Turkey on Tuesday after he visited Ankara.

Signal was earlier lost with a jet that took off from Ankara with Gen Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad and four others on board.

Libya's military chief was returning home after attending meetings in Turkey. Four other people were on board.

A senior Turkish official said the plane requested an emergency landing because of an electrical failure 16 minutes after it took off.
