Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A rumor of a fire on a train crossing Maharashtra state's Jalgaon in India led to a panic, causing several passengers to jump from the coaches and into the path of another train on Wednesday afternoon, officials said. Twelve people were killed in the incident.

Passengers of the Pushpak Express, alarmed by a suspected fire, jumped off the train, and were hit by the Karnataka Express, coming from the opposite direction on an adjacent track.

The accident took place between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora. The Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express had halted after someone pulled the chain after a rumour of fire spread at around 5 PM.

A rumour of "aag lag gayi, aag lag gayi (There's a fire, there's a fire)," triggered the outbreak of mass panic among train passengers and everyone started running, jumping off the train, said a witness to the train tragedy in Maharashtra.
