Supreme Court orders deployment of judicial officers in West Bengal to resolve electoral roll issues amid government-EC disputes.

This Supreme Court directive comes amid heightened scrutiny of West Bengal's electoral rolls, critical for the Assembly elections later in 2026. 

West Bengal SIR: Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipin Pancholi also observed that a “trust deficit” between the West Bengal government and the ECI had stalled the exercise at an important stage.

The Supreme Court directed the Calcutta High Court to assign judicial officers to help complete complete the SIR in West Bengal.

Ruing the “unfortunate blame game” and the “trust deficit” between the EC and the “democratically elected” TMC government, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi passed a slew of fresh directions to ensure completion of the special intensive revision (SIR) process

The court noted in its order that the circumstances being extraordinary, the request for entrustment of responsibility to judicial officers/former judicial officers was also of extra ordinary nature.
