Mexican forces killed El Mencho, head of the CJNG cartel. His followers retaliated with violence across 20 states.

Burned out cars blocked roads across 20 Mexican states on Sunday as drug cartels reacted to the death of drug lord Nemesis Rubén Oseguera Cervantes.

Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The United States opened a 24-hour crisis hotline and urged Americans in several Mexican tourist destinations to shelter in place Monday after violence triggered by the killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho."

At a popular beach resort, frightened tourists on social media described a "war zone" amid widespread retaliatory violence.

Mexico has deployed some 2,500 troops to counter the violence.

The United States had been looking for El Mencho for years, charging that he and CJNG were smuggling large quantities of fentanyl and other drugs into the nation. The State Department even offered a $15,000,000 prize for information that led to his capture. | OpIndia News
