“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” said US President Donald Trump.

It comes as the two countries accused each other of violating separate ceasefires to cover the celebrations of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire and a prisoner swap in honor of Victory Day in World War II, President Donald Trump announced.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the ceasefire would take place from May 9 to 11 and would include a suspension of all kinetic activity between the two countries. The US President expressed hope that the temporary halt in hostilities could mark the beginning of the end of the ongoing war.

Kyiv said on Wednesday that Russia had violated a unilateral ceasefire called by Ukraine by attacking Ukrainian cities with 108 combat drones and three missiles overnight.

Ukraine accused Russia on Wednesday of violating a unilateral ceasefire proposed by Kyiv after another wave of overnight strikes involving drones and missiles hit cities across the country. Ukrainian officials said the attacks continued only hours before the truce suggested by Kyiv was supposed to take effect at midnight on Wednesday.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday that Russia had decided to reject efforts to halt fighting and save lives by launching fresh attacks on Ukraine, which had called a unilateral ceasefire.
