A fire broke out in a residential building in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar early Sunday, leaving nine people belonging to two families dead.

More than a dozen people were rescued from the building, officials said. The injured people have been taken to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment.

A one year old toddler was among 9 others dead in a fire that was triggered after a blast in AC. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta expressed grief over the tragic incident in Vivek Vihar area. 

The bodies of the nine people killed in the blaze were recovered from the second floor of the building, while three others were found in the staircase. The body of one other person was recovered from the first floor.

Delhi multistorey fire: At least nine people were reportedly killed in the fire that broke out in a residential building in the Vivek Vihar area of Shahdara early this morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the bereaved families.

The cause of the fire has not been identified and is currently under investigation by the authorities. However, it is suspected that a short circuit or a blast in the AC might be the reason behind the blaze.
