Pakistan bombed Taliban government forces in Afghanistan's major cities overnight, the first time it has directly targeted its former allies over allegations they are harbouring militants, describing the situation as "open war".

Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Pakistan conducted airstrikes in areas of Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia overnight, officials from both countries said, as Islamabad's defense minister early Friday declared Pakistan was in "open war" with Afghanistan.

Relations between the neighbours have plunged in recent months, with land border crossings largely shut since deadly fighting in October killed more than 70 people on both sides.
