Trump Threatens Further Tariffs on China, Discusses Japan Trade Talks

· Investopedia

President Donald Trump dug in Monday in his trade dispute with China.

China last week announced a 34% tariff on U.S. imports, a response to Trump’s own announcement of tariffs on imports from China. Trump in a morning message on his Truth Social platform said that if China doesn’t withdraw its tariffs by tomorrow, he would set further tariffs on that country.

Those new U.S. tariffs would take effect Wednesday, Trump said.

“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump wrote. “Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!”

The announcement was the latest wrinkle in a fast-moving Monday that has seen stocks whipsaw as investors sought to determine what might come next in trade negotiations and how markets might react. Read Investopedia's live coverage of today's trading here.

Trump in the Monday message said a number of other countries have requested meetings to discuss trade that “will begin taking place immediately.” In an earlier message, he said Japan is sending negotiators after a conversation with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
