A groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 3 for the construction of a multi-storey parking garage capable of accommodating more than 400 vehicles between the Myoma Market and shopping centre on Tapin Shwehti Road (between Bogyoke Road and Sao San Htun Road), Lanmadaw Ward, Taunggyi, southern Shan State.

The ceremony for the multi-storey parking garage, which will be built at the night market site near Taunggyi Clock Tower, was attended by the Shan State Hluttaw Speaker, Shan State Chief Minister, members of the state government, ministers and departmental officials.

The project will be developed by Thiha Development Co., Ltd. with an estimated investment of K37 billion based on the previous exchange rate, according to company chairman U Zaw Lin Aung. Another K11 billion will be spent on constructing two overpasses and three underground passages.

“This project is intended to provide public parking and, in particular, will serve as the City Square Central Link connecting Myoma Market and City Square. In general, the building will have seven floors above ground and one basement. Fifth and sixth floors will be used for parking, which can accommodate 425 vehicles, while the market section will have three floors. The existing night market will also be upgraded into a modern market. The market component is being included to promote the development of retail and wholesale markets in the surrounding area and support SMEs,” said U Zaw Lin Aung.

He said the overpasses and underground passages were included to ensure safer pedestrian and vehicular movement and to improve cleanliness and the overall appearance of the city. The provision of parking for more than 400 vehicles between the market and shopping centre is also intended to revitalize the city’s markets and make parking more convenient for public-service vehicles.

He expressed confidence that the entire market area would be transformed into a cleaner and more developed urban environment.

Although the construction period for the project, which is being implemented on land leased from the municipal department, is set at four years, the company plans to complete it within two to three years, he said.

The project will also include a 25-foot-wide underground underpass connecting the market and shopping centre, allowing both pedestrians and vehicles to pass through the underground route.

The project will be constructed as an earthquake-resistant building in accordance with MMBC 2015-2018, as directed by the Shan State Government’s Municipal Department.
