U Mobile partners with SACOFA to accelerate 5G rollout in Sarawak

As U Mobile progresses with its ULTRA5G expansion, the company announced it has signed a 10-year strategic partnership with SACOFA Sdn Bhd, Sarawak’s leading telecommunications infrastructure company, to strengthen its fibre backhaul capabilities and expand the telco’s ULTRA5G network across the state.

This collaboration marks a significant step in U Mobile’s mission to deliver the widest and deepest 5G coverage nationwide, supporting both the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 and the state’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030). The goal is to achieve 80% Coverage of Populated Areas (CoPA) by the second half of 2026.

High-Capacity Backhaul for Statewide 5G Expansion

Under the agreement, SACOFA will provide fibre leased line access to U Mobile’s 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) sites, ensuring high-capacity connectivity to regional Points of Interconnect (POIs). SACOFA’s fibre network, which spans more than 11000 kilometres across Sarawak, will form the backbone of U Mobile’s next-generation network, enabling reliable, low-latency 5G services for consumers, enterprises, and industries alike.

Driving Sarawak’s Digital Transformation

The partnership directly supports Sarawak’s digitalisation push under PCDS 2030, which identifies digital transformation as a key economic enabler. YB Dato Sri Haji Julaihi bin Haji Narawi, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication for Sarawak and Chairman of SACOFA, said the alliance exemplifies how technology can drive enterprise growth, innovation, and industry advancement across the state.

Voices from the Partnership

Wong Heang Tuck, CEO of U Mobile, highlighted the importance of the collaboration:

“By leveraging SACOFA’s extensive fibre infrastructure, we will work together to ensure that Sarawak becomes one of the earliest states to complete 5G deployment. This partnership is a key enabler in our drive to deliver the ULTRA5G experience, empowering consumers and enterprises to thrive in the digital economy.”

Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman B Abdul Taib, Managing Director of SACOFA, added:

“This strategic partnership marks another important milestone for SACOFA and represents a crucial step forward for Sarawak. Through the investment in 5G infrastructure and collaboration with U Mobile, we are committed to providing faster, more reliable connections while supporting the goals of PCDS 2030 and the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030.”
