A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal turned into a depression on Friday evening, which will bring rain in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the low-pressure area is centred off the coast of Andhra Pradesh and was around 370 km from Chennai, 450 km from Andhra Pradesh's Vishakapatnam and 640 km from Odisha's Gopalpur.
The weather body said that the low pressure area will move northwards in the next 24 hours, which will cause light to moderate rainfall in Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh, with heavy rain in isolated areas in both states from Saturday.
"Wind warnings indicate squally conditions with speeds reaching 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, persisting over the westcentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal until the morning of December 23. Winds along the Andhra Pradesh-north Tamil Nadu coast are expected to be slightly lesser, with speeds around 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph," it said.
The low-pressure conditions will persist in south Odisha coast on December 21 and 22, with wind speeds hovering around 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph.
Fishermen have been advised to stay caution as the sea conditions will likely be turbulent.
"Rough to very rough seas are likely across the westcentral and southwest Bay of Bengal during this period and along the Andhra Pradesh-north Tamil Nadu and south Odisha coasts. Mariners and coastal residents are advised to exercise caution and follow local advisories to ensure safety during these potentially hazardous weather conditions," the weather body said.
