Maruti Suzuki India Limited has kicked off FY27 on a strong note, expanding its domestic market share to 42 per cent, up from 39 per cent in the previous fiscal, underscoring its continued dominance in the Indian passenger vehicle space.

According to PTI, the company’s Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales), Partho Banerjee, said the gain in market share has been driven primarily by robust demand for passenger cars, with SUVs also playing a crucial role in the growth momentum. "We started the new fiscal with a bang in April with record sales and also gained market share," he noted.

The automaker posted its highest-ever monthly sales in April 2026, selling a total of 2,39,646 units, a sharp jump from 1,79,791 units in the same month last year. Domestic sales reached a record 1,91,122 units, while exports rose to 40,054 units. Supplies to other OEMs stood at 8,470 units during the month.

Passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market climbed to 1,87,704 units, compared to 1,38,704 units a year earlier. The utility vehicle portfolio emerged as a key growth driver, with sales rising to 77,892 units from 59,022 units last year. The segment includes models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Maruti Suzuki Jimny.

Banerjee highlighted that SUV sales hit an all-time high of 55,065 units in April, registering a 141.6 per cent year-on-year growth, bringing the company close to the top position in the segment.

The compact and mid-size car segment also witnessed strong traction, with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Maruti Suzuki WagonR collectively recording 80,659 units in April 2026, up from 61,912 units a year ago.

Entry-level cars also staged a strong comeback, with combined sales of the Maruti Suzuki Alto and Maruti Suzuki S-Presso rising to 16,066 units from 6,332 units in April last year, reflecting a 74.4 per cent growth, as cited by PTI.

Other segments contributed steadily to overall volumes, with van sales led by the Maruti Suzuki Eeco increasing to 13,087 units, while the Maruti Suzuki Super Carry recorded 3,418 units.

Industry-wide, passenger vehicle sales in April are estimated at around 4.5 lakh units, marking a 27 per cent increase over 3.54 lakh units in the year-ago period, indicating a strong start to the new fiscal for the auto sector.

With record-breaking volumes across segments and rising traction in SUVs and small cars alike, Maruti Suzuki appears well-positioned to sustain its leadership momentum in FY27.
