Hyderabad: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted an international gold smuggling racket allegedly involved in transporting foreign-origin gold from Bangladesh to Hyderabad via Kolkata. Five persons have been arrested in connection with the case.

During the operation, DRI officials seized 3.1471 kg of foreign-origin gold, USD 60,000 and EUR 21,500, with the total value of the seized gold and foreign currency estimated at approximately Rs 5.84 crore.

Acting on specific intelligence regarding a gang involved in smuggling gold from Bangladesh through Kolkata to Hyderabad, officers of the DRI Hyderabad Zonal Unit and Vijayawada Regional Unit launched a joint operation.

As part of the operation, officials intercepted a Scorpio vehicle on the outskirts of Vijayawada. During a thorough search, foreign currency was recovered from a concealed compartment inside the vehicle.

Upon interrogation, the two occupants of the vehicle reportedly admitted that they had handed over smuggled gold on the outskirts of Vijayawada. They also disclosed that the seized foreign currency represented part of the proceeds from the sale of smuggled gold.

Based on the information, DRI officials immediately launched another operation and identified three suspected gold carriers travelling towards Hyderabad in a passenger bus.

The bus was intercepted near a toll plaza, and the three suspects were searched. During the inspection, officials recovered three foreign-origin gold bars weighing approximately 3.1 kg.

Meanwhile, the DRI has launched a further investigation to identify other individuals involved in the smuggling network and trace its additional links.
