57 AI billionaires are worth $320 billion combined

by · Boing Boing

A new analysis from FutureSearch's wealth study of AI billionaires counts 57 AI billionaires worldwide, worth a combined $320 billion — and almost none of that fortune has anything to do with a PhD. Chip designer Chen Tianshi of Cambricon Technologies tops the list at $40 billion, followed by OpenAI president Greg Brockman ($28 billion) and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng ($27 billion).

About 90% of the $320 billion sits in illiquid private equity, and years spent in the field barely correlate with wealth — tenure among the group ranges from 2 to 36 years. Four cofounders of the AI coding tool Cursor became billionaires before turning 27. Meanwhile Yann LeCun, Meta's former chief AI scientist and one of deep learning's most celebrated researchers, has accumulated roughly $400 million — a fraction of what founders with far less academic pedigree hold. The report's blunt conclusion: "A PhD is neither necessary nor sufficient" for getting rich in AI.
