Car retail sales in India continued their strong momentum in July 2026. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), dealerships retailed 4,16,555 passenger vehicles during the month, registering a healthy 19.13% YoY growth over 3,49,674 units sold in July 2025. While sales were up strongly on a yearly basis, they declined marginally by 1.68% compared to 4,23,677 units retailed in June 2026.
The milestone is significant as July 2026 became the first July on record to cross 4 lakh car registrations. Overall automobile retail sales also touched a new July high, with registrations across all segments rising to 25,91,138 units, up 25.89% YoY.
Car Retail Sales July 2026 – Maruti Continues To Lead
Maruti Suzuki remained India’s largest passenger vehicle brand with retail sales of 1,61,873 units in July 2026, up 19.70% from 1,35,232 units sold a year earlier. The company continued to dominate the market with a 38.86% share, meaning nearly four out of every ten passenger vehicles registered during the month wore a Maruti Suzuki badge.
Tata Motors retained the second spot with 58,774 registrations, posting a robust 36.84% YoY growth. Mahindra followed closely with 56,219 units, growing 23.69% over July last year. Hyundai continued in fourth position with 47,853 registrations, recording a relatively modest 5.69% increase. Tata also widened its lead over Hyundai during the month, while Mahindra remained comfortably ahead of the Korean automaker.
Toyota retained fifth place with 29,443 units, followed by Kia at 25,551 units. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India was among the few major OEMs to report a decline, with retail registrations falling 7.65% YoY to 8,221 units. Further down the list, JSW MG Motor retailed 7,030 vehicles, Honda Cars India registered 5,822 units, while Renault and Nissan recorded healthy YoY growth at 3,505 and 2,698 units respectively.
BMW Leads Luxury Segment, VinFast Continues Expansion
In the luxury segment, BMW India remained the highest-selling premium brand with 1,702 retail registrations, ahead of Mercedes-Benz at 1,527 units. VinFast, which recently commenced deliveries in India, recorded 1,482 registrations during the month. Force Motors retailed 1,193 units, Citroen registered 950 units, while BYD India recorded 749 registrations. Jaguar Land Rover retailed 603 units, whereas Jeep India witnessed a decline to 218 units.
Fuel Mix Continues To Evolve
Buyer preferences continued shifting during July 2026. Petrol and ethanol-powered passenger vehicles accounted for 41.68% of total registrations, down from 47.62% a year ago. Diesel’s share remained relatively stable at 17.73%. CNG and LPG vehicles continued gaining popularity, increasing their share to 24.67% from 21.38% in July 2025. Electric vehicles also strengthened their presence, accounting for 7.90% of passenger vehicle registrations compared to 5.14% in the same month last year. Hybrid vehicles maintained a healthy 8.02% share.
Strong Start To FY27
Passenger vehicle retail sales for FY27 (April-July 2026) stood at 16,87,040 units, up 22.80% compared to 13,73,821 units during the corresponding period last year. Across all vehicle segments, total retail registrations for FY27 YTD rose 18.27% to 1,04,76,327 units, reflecting continued strength in the domestic automobile market.
