Poundland to close six stores across UK including one near Nottinghamshire - full list of closures

A prominent British high street retailer has announced that six of its outlets will shut down nationwide - including one location in Derbyshire.

Established in Burton during 1990, Poundland has developed into one of Britain's most favoured shopping destinations, running approximately 800 outlets at its height.

However, after being purchased by Gordon Brothers this June, the firm is now seeking to cut its shop numbers to between 650 and 700 locations.

Within Derbyshire, the Poundland branch on Church Street in Ripley is scheduled to shut down later this month.

This outlet launched after Poundland's previous owner, Pepco, transformed numerous former Wilko premises in October 2023, after the retail chain's demise several weeks earlier, reports Derbyshire Live.

The Amber Valley branch represents one of six locations closing on Sunday, September 28, alongside sites in Uttoxeter, Shropshire and Kent.

A Poundland representative commented: "Poundland today confirms the location of a further six stores that will close under its restructuring and recovery plan designed to return the business to growth. Colleagues at these locations earmarked for closure under the recovery plan were informed of their store's status in June and Poundland has now shared a specific closing date for their locations."

The reorganisation strategy received approval on August 26 and will "provide the platform" for Poundland to execute its recovery initiatives.

These initiatives encompass cutting costs and "returning to simple £1, £2 and £3 pricing in grocery aisles and reducing the roster of stores down to around 650-700."

Poundland has revealed that an additional 10 stores are yet to be confirmed for closure under its current plan. This follows the discount chain's acquisition by Gordon Brothers for £1 earlier this summer, a firm previously known for owning Laura Ashley.

The company is also set to shut down its distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, and its national distribution centre in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026, according to reports from the Express.
