New Delhi, Nov 14: Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani has offered to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) through “virtual means” after being summoned under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) for Friday.

A spokesperson for the 66-year-old businessman said Ambani has assured “full cooperation” in the ongoing probe concerning the Jaipur-Reengus Highway Project, where the ED suspects that around ₹100 crore were allegedly routed abroad via hawala.

Sources said the ED had initially asked Ambani to appear in person and record his statement. Several others, including alleged hawala operators, have already been questioned in the case. Hawala refers to the illegal transfer of funds, mostly in cash.

The spokesperson clarified that the matter dates back 15 years to 2010 and relates to a domestic road contract awarded by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. “There was no foreign exchange component involved. The JR Toll Road has been fully completed and has been with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) since 2021,” the statement said.

Ambani, who is not on the board of Reliance Infrastructure, served as a non-executive director from April 2007 to March 2022 and was never involved in daily management.

Earlier, Ambani had been questioned in a separate money laundering case linked to an alleged ₹17,000 crore bank fraud involving his group companies. (Agencies)
