The direct train service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok is set to be revived soon, offering travellers a scenic and convenient overland alternative to flying
According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Malaysia and Thailand are working together to bring the route back to life using the existing railway line that connects Bangkok, Padang Besar, Butterworth, and Kuala Lumpur.
Bernama reported that since the infrastructure is already in place, the focus now is on coordination between both countries' railway operators — Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTM) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).
Both operators have been given three months to carry out initial preparations, which include aligning operations, launching joint marketing efforts, and setting up a seamless ticketing system
If all goes according to plan, the cross-border service could begin operations later this year.
During a working visit to Thailand, Loke met with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, and toured the Bang Sue Central Terminal in Bangkok — the country's main rail hub and a key part of its expanding high-speed rail network.
Loke also welcomed a proposal from Thai authorities to revive rail services from Sungai Golok across the border to Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas in Kelantan
However, that project would take more time, as the railway tracks on the Malaysian side have not been in use for years and would require restoration.
Once launched, the KL–Bangkok train line could offer travellers a unique and relaxed way to explore both countries while potentially boosting tourism and local economies along the route.
