Uggah: Deeper access channel, management systems to ensure Miri Port continues to drive Northern S’wak’s economic development

MIRI (Sept 19): A deeper access channel and excellent management systems will ensure Miri Port continues to be a driving force for economic development in northern Sarawak, said Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The Deputy Premier said Miri Port will strengthen its position as a key port linking Sarawak’s northern region to global markets, aligning with the state’s vision of becoming a developed, high-income economy by 2030.

He said the port is crucial to the nation’s economic development and it serves as a vital catalyst, facilitating trade, and providing essential logistics services.

“Miri Port has significantly contributed to Miri’s growth, transforming it from a modest town to a city in 2005. With the completion of the new access channel, which allows deeper-drafted vessels to dock, Miri Port is poised to enhance its role further.

“Given that more than 80 per cent of global trade is carried by sea, ports play a key role in connecting regions and continents,” he said in a speech for the Miri Port Authority (MPA) Thanksgiving Dinner.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi read the speech at the dinner, which was held in conjunction with the groundbreaking for the proposed dredging and associated works at Batang Baram Delta here.

To meet the demands of global trade, Uggah said ports must maintain efficient infrastructure, state-of-the-art machinery, and advanced technology.

Recognising the critical role of port development, he said the Ministry of Infrastructure and Ports Development has put forward several proposals for Miri Port under the 12th and 13th Malaysia Plans.

Among the key proposals are the establishment of a Free Zone and the development of a deep-sea port at Kuala Baram, projected for completion by 2030.

“These initiatives are designed to enhance Miri Port’s competitiveness and operational efficiency.

“By implementing these projects, we anticipate a substantial boost in industrial and economic activities, particularly benefiting Miri and the northern region of Sarawak.

“This strategic development will play a pivotal role in stimulating growth and strengthening the region’s economic landscape,” he added.

As Sarawak advances into the Digital Economy, Industry 4.0, and the era of big data, Uggah stressed it is essential that the port industry does not miss out on transformative developments.

He said the industry should embrace full automation of port operations and leverage emerging digital infrastructure to connect with global big data systems.

“Miri Port should actively explore strategies to not only facilitate efficient, secure, and safe navigation but also to enhance the overall security of shipping operations and support enforcement efforts.

“It is crucial to find innovative ways to improve navigation controls, reduce maritime accidents, and streamline turnaround times. By focusing on these areas, Miri Port will ensure it remains competitive and responsive to the evolving needs of the maritime industry,” he added.
